Serving Language Communities through Linguistics, Literacy and Translation

February 2008: the Manila library was
re-opened after a renovation that added
shelf and research space to the library.

Libraries

In the Philippines, SIL operates research libraries in Manila and Davao City. The libraries have a total of over 50,000 volumes (40,234 Manila; 9,903 Davao City), including general linguistic materials, translation helps, references on literacy and education, and anthropological works. The libraries also contain materials produced by and in consultation with SIL researchers in and about the languages of the indigenous cultural communities. Each library specializes in literature on the languages of its respective region.

The Philippine Association of Academic and Research Libraries (PAARL) presented the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) Philippines with the 2003 PAARL Award "Outstanding Library/Research Program of the Year Award".

SIL libraries in the Philippines are open to the public for research and are used by students and scholars studying the languages and cultures of the Philippines.

It's all about Preservation & Accessibility

SIL has been collecting language data in the Philippines since 1953. Recent technology has made it feasible to preserve and make these resources available as never before. In fact, many published works are already available on the SIL website. However, an even larger work is also underway – to digitize, archive, and publish online almost everything, including source materials in all their various forms.

Note: In 2010, the research library service at two regional centers in Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya, and Nasuli, Bukidnon, ceased when SIL closed our operations in those locations. Our commitment to providing research and library service about the languages and cultures of the Philippines has not ceased, however, and the Manila and Davao City libraries have been strengthened in staff and resources to continue this valuable service.
