A survey of the following topics in the field of second language acquisition: the nature of language, the learning process, first language acquisition compared with second language acquisition, learning styles and strategies, learner variables including personality factors, sociocultural factors, contrastive analysis and error analysis, communicative competence, language testing, and theories of second language acquisition.

At the end of each chapter there is a discussion of an application of information covered in the chapter to classroom methodology, a list of suggested readings, and topics and questions for study and discussion. There is an extensive bibliography and index.

This book is often used as a textbook in introductory courses in second language acquisition for language teachers. It is in its third edition and is highly recommended.
