Awedoba 1990

Summary

The Kasem language has many homographs (two words spelled alike but different in meaning), since orthographic conventions do not indicate tone. Too many homographs affect reading fluency and comprehension and many printed texts are unreadable. Indiscriminate tone marking, however, would entail heavy costs for both readers and writers.

Author calls for an examination of the language, to establish which homographs should be distinguished tonally for effective written communication.
