Summary

Is the result of a conference organized by the University of Michigan in February 1984. Brought together people doing research in North America on the subject of literacy, to explore the new prospects and fields of research appearing in this sector. Research workers represented a wide range of disciplines, from anthropology and sociolinguistics to cognitive psychology and educational sociology.

Main message is that the phenomenon of literacy is a complex and multidimensional and sociocultural phenomenon, dependent on the context in which it is situated. Cannot have the same definition or the same functions at different places and at different times. Has two notable points:

  • Most articles quote research linked to the learning of reading and writing by children in school. There is little information about literacy in the work place.
  • Finds all the faults of American "experimentalism," to the detriment of clear theories on the process of learning to read and write.
