Brown, Gay. 1989. "Review of 'Training family and friends as adult literacy tutors' by Scoble, Topping, and Wigglesworth 1988." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: lay specialist.

Summary

Describes the Paired Reading technique developed in the United Kingdom. Method encourages tutors to choose their own reading material at any level of readability, provided it is within their level of competence. Students can select books and materials of high interest to themselves, irrespective of difficulty. With easier books, students read aloud and the tutor helps when necessary. With more difficult books, they read aloud together, and the tutor encourages the student to repeat new words.

Reviewer recommends the article as potentially useful to literacy workers in Papua New Guinea, especially to help semiliterates become competent readers.
