Gives a brief history of pictorial experience of the Papua New Guinean and of pictorial research as related to the nonliterate and newly literate person in Papua New Guinea. Gives characteristics of local two-dimensional art, such as

• carvings and paintings on wood
• turtle shells
• sea shells
• drums
• bamboo, and
• combs.

Discusses cultural preference for various types of pictures, such as

• photographs
• line drawings, and
• stick figures.

Comments on recognition of partial figures and depth due to size constancy. Discusses realism, symbolism, and meaning.

Presents a good overview of the studies done at that time, and gives useful references. Would have been more complete if examples were included of Papua New Guinea art and types of art people liked or did not like.
