Summary

Challenges educators to prepare minority students for successful participation in the school system, and to enable schools to incorporate parents and their culture into the school instruction plan (page 1). Through the concept of literacy for empowerment, the Portillo study challenges stereotypes often attributed to Mexican families in the United States.

Stereotypes regard passive and inactive participation of Mexicans in schools. Blames language barriers and inability of parents to assist children at home for student academic failure . Shows how some educators and Mexican families in one community became empowered by their collaborative educational efforts at home and school.

Major research question was how Spanish-speaking parents assisted their children in the education process, and how these parents helped each other relate to the school (pages 2--3).
