Greenbaum, Sidney. 1990a. "Standard English and the international corpus of English." World Englishes: 1985–. Interest level: general.

Summary

In 1988, proposed the establishment of an international corpus of English (ICE) that would consist of regional samples of standard varieties. This would be in countries where English is a first language and the national varieties in countries where it is an official additional language. All the components would be assembled along parallel lines and would include spoken and manuscript English as well as printed English. States that since English is truly international, those engaged in international communication in English should be familiar with other national varieties (page 83).

The material would be collected within the same period and analyzed in similar ways. An advisory board, consisting of scholars with expertise in the construction of English corpora (bodies of data), computational techniques, and in English as a world language, set some other guidelines for data collection. Data from the component corpora could then be used for research into the English of the various regions. It would also contribute to comparative studies (pages 79-80). Concordance users would also benefit.
