Kaggwa and Beyembe 1980

Reference

Kaggwa, Norbert, and John Beyembe. 1980.Illustration for development: Illustrations for art in Africa. Nairobi, Kenya: Afrolit Society. 69 pages. Location: Dallas SIL Library 741.6 I29. Interest level: general.

Summary

Advises what to illustrate for material used in Africa. Gives examples of rules and regulations for illustrations. Presents questions to ask and keep in mind when testing illustrations for the viewer. Includes brief manual for design and illustration preparation for reproduction. Includes chapter on how to develop drawing skills. Is easier to note potential reproduction and readability problems when using photos.

Evaluation

Deals only with the African viewer. Need to adapt some comments and suggestions to use in other countries. One tip may be that illustrating people in a language group for the reader to recognize is taboo in some other cultures. Has a lot of excellent illustration samples.
