| Summary | |
Describes the philosophy and anthropological methodology underlying the work of SIL in Peru--particularly the aspects pertaining to human relations and cultural change (page 351).
SIL aspires to serve marginal linguistic groups based on fundamental principles that clearly respect the groups' customs and rights of self-determination. SIL believes linguistics and anthropology should contribute to the well-being of the groups studied. Not to a well-being as determined and imposed by foreigners, but as deemed significant to the traditional society.
Recognizes that culture change is extremely complex and the mere presence of scientific researchers can have a deleterious effect on a traditional community. SIL endeavors to serve Peruvian and other scholars by cooperating in fieldwork and publishing scientific material. SIL does not believe a foreign religion should be imposed on a community. Everyone should have access to master works in their own language, including the teachings of Jesus Christ as presented in the New Testament.
