Over a period of time, the Lemans discovered that Cheyennes learn to read best, and enjoy it the most, when the reading process is not the focus of the session. They noticed that hymn sings, Bible studies, text transcribing, and reviewing translated Scripture portions led to increased ability in mother tongue literacy.

In the past, they held quite a few formal literacy classes. They found that Cheyennes learn better through the "passive literacy" approach and retain the knowledge longer. General method is to have a person read or sing material aloud or to use tape recordings. New readers listen and follow along on their own copy. Exerts no pressure on new readers to read aloud in the presence of other people until they feel ready.
