Summary

Questions the hypothesis that variations in the level of literacy in the home are responsible for social class differences in children's reading achievement. Argues that as specific oral discourse styles used at home by middle-class families match school language use, this accounts for later literacy success of these children rather than literacy levels. Discusses social interactive factors, communicative needs in the early stages of development, and increasing freedom from contextual support.
