Reference

Sodemann, Jean. 1987. "Learning styles and their effect on training across cultures." Notes On Translation. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Gives brief definition of learning style, "how a student learns." Before training people in another culture, you need to know how they learn and remember.

  • Are they visual, aural, or action oriented (kinesic)?
  • Are they impulsive or do they reflect before reaching a conclusion?
  • What are their motives?
  • What brings them satisfaction?
  • Do they think in abstract terms or in concrete terms?
  • Are they whole thinkers or part thinkers?
  • Are they dependent or independent?
  • Do they work best in the morning or in the evening?

Many cultures teach by demonstration, observation, and memorization. Teachers in cross-cultural settings need to rethink their methodology.
