Summary

Teaching children to read in mother tongue languages in Papua New Guinea is a process that must combine a well-planned program. Need to consider the physical, cultural, political, and economic situations of the people involved. Any decisions must account for constraints of the learning situation. Includes the

  • availability of teachers
  • access to materials, and
  • cultural demands on the children.

Must also account for what was learned in the West and in developing countries, about how children learn to think and how they learn to read.
